What is SEO? (and what’s our approach)
SEO is often viewed as the ‘technical tweaks’ made to your web site that improve your rankings in search engines like Google. That’s partially true. but in reality, SEO covers a wide skill set including
- technical set up and analysis
- research (keyword and network)
- content creation
- link building
- online PR
- usability and design
SEO techniques
Techniques can be complex but at a basic level you can break them down into:-
- Work done ‘On page’ or ‘On Site’ – This typically involves making sure search engines can read and remember all of your data. This is often a technical process and is preceded by a site audit. This is also referred to as “on page optimisation”.
- Work done ‘Off page’ or ‘Off Site’ – The biggest influence on your search engine results takes place off page. At a very basic level, the amount and quality of links to your website will go a long way in determining how well it performs. Your business, the competition and your current link profile will determine what type of links need to be built. There is an art and science to this.
What’s different about us?
We like to think we are pretty effective at SEO. What we feel seperates some of the more mechanical approaches to SEO from the more imaginative ones are the following
- Keyword/Network Research – We concentrate on ‘actionable insights’ from networks and people as well as search engines and technical data.
- Content/Link building – Creating the right content mix and building out sections is a skill gained through experience. We are good at helping you spot content development opportunities that can be used either on page or off page to improve your web presence.
- Conversion/UX Design - Obtaining the required search result is only the start of the job, conversion to a sale or an enquiry is where the investment pays off. We take a business centred and holistic view to SEO.
Whats the best SEO strategy for your business?
The truth is there is no one size fits all strategy. Your strategy will be shaped by
- The type of organisation you are.
- The sector you target and your aspirations.
- The skills and time available of your staff.
- Your budget
Setting realistic goals for SEO
Once ‘on page’ and ‘off page’ requirements are analysed its time to set some realistic targets. We believe in being completely open and honest about what can be achieved given the following parameters :-
- Timescale – SEO produces valuable results, but it isn’t a short term strategy. It often takes 4- 6 months before significant improvements are made, more if the competition is fierce. (Paid Search can often be used as a stop-gap and a valuable keyword research technique in the meantime)
- Budget - Back in the late 1990′s, you could expect to buy the right domain, add your keywords and begin to rank for most things at little cost. These days, you will need to budget for link building, tracking, management and strategy.
- SEO still has the best ROI – Even after budgeting for these costs SEO still turns out to be the highest ROI of any of the online acquisition channels.
